At the beginning of this year, I made a simple decision to be a better version of my 2015-self in all areas. I have started working on it & 56 days into 2016, I am noticing changes. There is a Japanese word that is apt for this time & that word is “KAI ZEN“. It is the practice of continuous improvements, in relation to this is the word CAPACITY.

I realize that for me to be better than last year, I must increase my capacity, I must grow up & stretch to the next level. I saw a post on a friend’s Facebook page that says “When God wants to grow you, he makes you uncomfortable”. An HBR article says “staying within your comfort zone is a good way to prepare for today but a terrible way to prepare for tomorrow“. I believe this to be very true, almost all of the time, our success in life & elevation to the next level is outside our comfort zone & it takes strength & courage to make the move & get better.

Like it’s said, change is the only constant thing in life & as a minister in my church recently said “the biggest room in the world is the room for improvement” , we must strive to be better & reach our maximum potential.

There are a few points that I will like to highlight:

Forget about the PAST

This is a very important point. We all like to reminisce about the good old days when things were great or boast about our past achievements. It’s good, but it’s water under the bridge, like my pastor will usually say “Yesterday’s excellence is Today’s mediocrity”.

Be like Apostle Paul in Phil3;13, He forgets the things behind him & focuses on the things ahead. There is more to conquer, more exploits to be done, more things to discover.

A car has got a very small rear-view mirror to look at the back, but a very big window to look ahead. I am aware that people also hold unto past hurt, pains & negative feelings, but the same way you forget about the success you must forget the hurts too.

I know it’s a very difficult action to take but we must learn from the past & move on speedily.

When I think about capacity, I cant help but think about the act of filling a bucket or cup with water from a tap. To get the maximum amount of water into the vessel there must be an alignment between the vessel & the source.

God is the source of everything, He knows the end from the beginning & he has the best of intentions for you as an individual, align with God to locate your purpose in life & let him direct your path to fulfillment.

The moon reflects the light of the sun when it’s in perfect alignment & that’s how it rules the night time. You must be connected to a higher authority, get to learn from someone ahead of you in the area you have chosen to improve on. Everything that works is connected.

Little Foxes

Going with the same bucket analogy, I realized that one thing that would hinder a vessel from reaching full capacity is a hole. The higher the number of holes, the more difficult it is to fill up.

The bible talks about Little foxes that spoil the vine (Songs of Solomon 2:15), we need to keep an eye on those little things like bad attitude, offense, insecurity, unwillingness to learn, etc.

A little rudder controls a big ship at sea, learn to deal with things quickly & don’t let them hold you down & keep you on the spot.

To reach your fullest capacity you must include & engage others. Like  John Maxwell will say “All of us are smarter than one of us“. You must learn to collaborate with others in your quest for success & greatness, your net-worth is determined by your network.

Organizations today are looking for people with the required social skills to network & perform well in a team & not just their technical abilities.

As the world gets smaller & smaller everyday with technology, the ability to collaborate is getting richer & deeper as you can work with someone on the other side of the world on any project. So don’t think locally, think BIG, think Global!!

Do you have a plan for improvement & for increase in capacity?

No matter what happens this year, be determined to have measurable progress in relative time.

This is my snippet. I AM SHALOMESQ!!!

  1. Nice write up… The fastest and best way to build capacity is learning directly from those that have been there before you and learning from their mistakes and Ways of working and building on that. Thanks again for the write up.
