14th January 2015, I watched a CNN report about two guys ( Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson ) that achieved a near impossible feat. They became the first to free-climb the El Capitan’s Dawn Wall, a 3,000 ft rock formation in Yosemite National Park with their bare hands!!
3rd February 2015 on BBC, daredevil duo ( Will Gadd and Sarah Hueniken ) became the first to scale the 51m-high frozen Niagara falls!!
By 31st March 2015, it became obvious that the APC presidential candidate Rtd. General Buhari ( at 72 years) & his vice Prof. Osinbajo will become the next politically elected leaders of the most populous black nation in the world ( NIGERIA)!!!
These guys went against all odds to achieve what looked impossible, they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat so to say.
These events got me thinking about my life, one of the things I try to do as a person is to conquer my fears. Most people define FEAR as False Evidence Appearing Real, what I try to do is to seek knowledge about any issue or situation I am afraid of & then acquire the required skill to conquer it.
I also went against all odds when I overcame my fear of water to becoming someone that swims quite comfortably on a regular basis. This took me 20 lessons from an astute swimming coach while I was stationed in Accra, Ghana.
I overcame my fear of heights in Ghana as well. My wife & I spent our honeymoon in Ghana in 2005 & one of the places we visited was the Kakum National Park, Cape Coast. I had read about the canopy walk & browsed to ensure I knew all of the details about it.
Even though I was seriously sweating on the inside, I took the 330m long, 40m high walk across 7 bridges & for a moment, my whole life flashed across my mind, but i went all the way & completed it with my wife. While stationed in Ghana between 2008 & 2010, we have taken the canopy walk over 6 times & its a different experience every time.
I gave all of these examples to make you know that YOU CAN MAKE IT!!!! Against all odds.
It doesn’t matter how bad that situation looks right now, if only you will believe & dig deep for the resources you have within you, you will make it.
1Cor10:13 has been my motivating scripture for the last 2 years or so, as I battled against a personal situation. It was a case of a mentor becoming a tormentor, a friend ( or so i thought) turned foe backstabbing me badly. The same way the women of Israel caused trouble for David by singing “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.“(1Sam18:7) It’s the same way my performance got me into trouble. I always strive to be the best in what I do, I don’t subscribe to mediocrity, I aim for excellence at all times.
Little did I know that these virtues of mine became a source of envy & intimidation to others. People of small minds suffered from inferiority complex & started plotting for my downfall. The issues started small & to be honest I had my own faults too, so I am not exonerating myself. I actually acknowledged my faults & apologized twice, but I didn’t know that their die was cast in “dealing with me“, so the apologies were useless.
1Cor10:13 (AMP) says “For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not [a]adjusted and [b]adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to [c]a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.”
The scripture is pretty much clear. There are a couple of points to pick out there, but I will touch on only one now:
What you are facing now is not unique to you, its common to man & people have overcome this before.
The lesson is not to doubt the possibility of overcoming against all odds, you need to look for examples of people who have gone through this & won. You must learn from them.
I will continue with other points in another post. I hope this will be of help to someone out there.
