Lights and Sounds – The review

On the 30th of December 2009, I woke up around 2 am & wrote this:

As we move into the last days of 2009, i cant help but take a look back at the year with awe. It has been a wonderful year, a year of Laughter, a year in which my worship life shifted to another level, there has been a lot of achievements, mountains have been subdued, things have happened both bad & good. Through it all God has been faithful & he deserves all the glory.

I am musically inclined & I love sound a lot ( still wondering why i did not study sound Engineering in the first place, I guess I will still go in that direction anyway). In the year 2009 I have heard a lot of artists & songs, that tickles my fancy, but there are these few that have radically changed my Life ( And that of my family as well). Please allow me to share with you my songs & Artists of the Year.

First stop is “He’s Able” by Deitrick Haddon, i first heard this song at KICC Ghana & it was amazing, Pastor Helen Yawson sang it & it glued to my spirit, then Sunny FM (a 24/7 gospel radio in Ghana), played it on air regularly & i got hooked, then i searched online & i saw his TBN ministration & those 6 mins shifted my worship life to the next level. God is indeed able to do exceedingly abundantly far above all i could ever ask or think & He proved it this year.

Coming Second is “How Great is Our God” by Chris Tomlin, this song takes me into the Holy of Holies, as it expresses the greatness of God, i cant help but break into tears as i look at my Life & see the Greatness & Goodness of God. I got this song from a colleague of mine, he kept asking me if i had listened to Chris Tomlin’s version of the song & i was like what’s the big deal. By the time i heard it while in the office, i was transformed into his presence & tears started rolling down my cheeks i had to rush to the rest room to compose myself & right there i was hooked.

Coming from the background of listening to Don Moen, Ron Kenoly, Manaratha Singers etc, I appreciated the beauty of this song.

These 2 songs are my worship songs of the year, now for Praise song of the year I have the “African Medley” by Sonnie Badu, Sunny FM Ghana introduced me to this Song & Artist and I can say it has been the most impacting experience for me. This medley is rich with Sonnie singing in both Yoruba & Ghanian dialects & it just sucked me in. I see my flavour of sound & music in his ministration & it has also fired my drive to perfect my musical talents in the service of our great God. He is a sincere minister & his genuine spirit flows out as he totally gives all in his ministrations.

These songs & artists have made 2009 so memorable for me & if you have noticed i have always updated my Facebook status with praise & worship songs everyday since the 2nd quarter of 2009, it has been a radical transformation & i give God all the praise for being at the right places at the right times to encounter them.

2010 will be awesome as we begin to hear the sound of Jubilee across our Lives,Nation & the entire World. Exciting times are ahead & I just cant wait to begin…….

Sadly I couldn’t continue this write up in 2010,11,12 & 13 as I lost a bit of focus regarding writing. I encountered songs & artists that radicalised my praise & worship, but I just did not pen it down.

My focus was predominantly on sound at the time, but my love for lights went ballistic on a training trip to China in 2012. I couldn’t believe the things these Chinese guys did with lights & sound effects. I recorded so much on my camera & from there on I started looking at shows like The Voice, American Idols,X-Factor differently.

I also became super aware of the lights & sounds set-up in my church COZA ( Commonwealth of Zion Assembly) Abuja & I must say that the growth & capabilities of the Media team has been awesome!! I celebrate you guys!!

I don’t want to get too techy & bore you with the technical details of lights & sounds for now. This will come later  but I will just stick with the programme here ( my song & Artist of 2014).

I was really treated to the best of the best in 2014. Thanks to COZA I was introduced to Songs by Tye Tribbett, Tasha Cobbs, Kim Burrell, Frank Edwards,Lara George,Kurt Carr, Midnight Crew, etc…… In fact I had the privilege of attending LIVE concerts of some of these artist & because of them, I have become a regular paying customer on iTunes as I just go download their albums & my favourite songs as oppose to what I was doing before…..(hmmm)

Now this is my assessment based on the songs & artists i was exposed to in 2014 & even though I had a great time in 2014 with some of the songs & artist, one particular artist & album did it all for me in 2014…….drum roll please……..

The Album & Artist of the year 2014 for me is GREATER THAN by TYE TRIBBETT!!!! I had listened to Tye’s 2010 album Fresh & love songs like Champion & Eulogy, but GREATER THAN did it for me in praise & worship.

He’s got the finesse to jam the high tempo songs ( like HE TURNED IT & IF HE DID IT BEFORE…SAME GOD) as well as the sensitivity of worship songs ( like WHAT CAN I DO & the Medley THERE IS NOTHING LIKE/GLORY TO GOD)…. COZA’s avalanche gave me a taste of this album & the man himself gave an abundant dose during his LIVE concert.

He said I can do 2 things with my praise & worship: 1. Glorify & exalt God & 2. Give the devil a black eye!!!! AWESOME!!!

Thanks Tye for changing the landscape of gospel music & taking over in the secular… you won 2 Grammy awards man!!

That is no mean feat!!! I salute & celebrate you!!! I cant wait to see what you will do in 2015…Tasha my girl, you rock too, but I have to give it to Tye!!!!

This is my snippet, I am SHALOMESQ
